Activities Launched on the SAILeR Project: FOI Brings Together an International Team to Develop Innovative Learning Design

The kick-off and coordination meeting of the new Erasmus+ project SAILeR is taking place in Varaždin on December 4 and 5, 2025. The project Streamlining AI in Learning Reimagination (SAILeR) is the third in a series of three Erasmus+ projects coordinated under the leadership of Professor Divjak. With a total budget of EUR 400,000, FOI will implement the project from 2025 to 2028, in cooperation with international partners: Goethe University Frankfurt (Germany), the University of Oulu (Finland), the University of Groningen (the Netherlands), and the Open University of Catalonia (Spain). Through various activities, the project will engage 1,000 educators across Europe and worldwide.

The project continues the international collaboration that contributed to the development of FOI’s innovative and globally recognized learning design tool: Balanced Design Planning – BDP (learning-design.eu), which currently has nearly 3,000 users worldwide. SAILeR seeks to approach learning design from a new perspective, starting from the teacher’s vision for a course or study program. It emphasizes the teacher’s leading role as a pedagogical decision-maker, supported by learning design tools, learning analytics, and artificial intelligence.

During the meeting, alongside the project presentation, the international project team began activities aimed at bringing learning design closer to educators by providing an environment for developing a leading learning design vision within the BDP tool.

A learning vision requires exploring future needs (as far as possible), understanding the student population we teach (as much as possible), using technology (where justified), but also collaborating with colleagues across Europe and the world,” said Professor Divjak, the project leader.

SAILeR is the only project from the University of Zagreb selected for funding under this year's Erasmus+ call for cooperation partnerships in higher education, where the success rate was below 10 percent.
