The SAILeR project is already contributing to the further development of the Balanced Design Planning (BDP) tool, translating project research and educator needs into new functionalities for learning design.
One of the key developments supports macro-level learning design planning. The upgraded BDP tool enables educators to take a broader view of their course design and visually explore its structure and relationships before and during more detailed planning. This development builds on SAILeR activities related to the vision of learning design, storytelling and storyboarding.
Another important upgrade introduces learning outcome prioritisation. Educators can now assign relative weights to learning outcomes using three different approaches: equal weighting, manual weighting or the SWING method. Supporting guidance has also been integrated to help educators use these approaches when designing their courses.
From Course to Study Programme Design
BDP is also expanding beyond individual courses to support learning design at the study programme level. New curriculum design functionalities enable educators to work with study programme learning outcomes and courses and examine their relationships at programme level.
These functionalities are already being used in an ongoing case study involving the redesign of a postgraduate-level study programme, while further development and additional case studies are planned within SAILeR.
Advancing AI Support for Learning Design
Development of the AI assistant in BDP is also progressing as part of SAILeR. The development follows an iterative approach, with feedback collected from users through their interactions with the current AI assistant and further upgrades being prepared as the project moves into its next research and development phase.
Together, these developments extend BDP's support from course-level learning design to study programme design, while strengthening its capabilities for visual planning, learning outcome prioritisation and AI-supported learning design.
